Optimist International was formed in 1919 to assist youth in various capacities. Optimists have been active in London since 1937. In our community Optimist Clubs sponsor a number of youth activities. These include; sports teams, bicycle rodeos, oratorical and essay contests, leadership courses, Respect for Law and Youth in Government programs, "Just Say NO" - drug awareness, Hugh O’Brien Foundation – Youth Leadership Seminar or “HOBIE”, educational and sports bus trips in addition to many other community based youth activities.

In 1994 the Optimist Youth In Education Program (YIEP) was founded. This program introduces students to Internationally renowned personalities. The program was expanded in 1995 to include a YIEP Fund with a mandate to provide scholarships, awards and bursaries to students.

In 1997 the Optimist Youth In Education Fund (YIEP) Committee established a YIEP Fund Scholarship to annually assist a graduating student with their post secondary school education. While passing grades are required – the focus for our Scholarship is on non-academic qualities.
